Life in Cairns

 Teny writes......

With this post I am giving you a glimpse of life in Cairns. The first thing we noticed when we stepped off the plane was the heat and the humidity. It is hot and muggy here all.the.time. What a change from the snow and cold we left behind in Ontario. A huge shock to our system! It is fall now and should be cooler and less humid by now, but so far it isn't. People don't put the air-conditioner on all the time because electricity is quite expensive. We have AC on in the bedrooms so at least we sleep well at night, but for the rest, the only way to cool off is to go for a swim. Most people have a pool in their backyard that is heated directly from sunshine, and they go swimming a few times every day all year round. As Cheree says, they can't live without one.

As you can see in the photo, we ate outside for every meal. Here are Jerry and Cheree at breakfast.

So what is wrong with this picture?

No steering wheel where there should be one, right?
That is because everyone drives on the wrong other side of the road, which means the driver sits on the right side of the car. Do you know how difficult it is to get used to driving on the left side through a roundabout? Any they have lots here!

Here is Jerry driving in our rental car.

The main crop grown in Cairns is sugar cane, which will soon be harvested.

Rusty's market has a great variety of fruits and vegetables for sale.  I loved sampling their fruit. Their mangoes are amazing! So delicious and juicy! Mangoes, pineapple, bananas, avocados, and passion fruit are grown here in the area, and make a delicious breakfast with Greek yogurt.

After a hard day at....sightseeing......Jerry is cooking dinner his favourite way.
In our opinion, it just doesn't fit that it gets dark early when it is so warm.

Ah, relaxing his favourite way here! Life is good in Cairns. He's not sure he's going back to Canada . . .
